An athletic young man roles out of bed in the morning and posts a selfie on social media. Is he seeking the praise of strangers or soliciting a sexual encounter or is he simply affirming the pride he has in getting himself into shape? The intent of posting the original photograph is changed by the interpretation of the artist as a painting. While much is lost from the photograph, something else is gained in seeing it as a painting.
Now the viewer may imagine an entirely different narrative. Was this guy recently released from a prison or refugee camp? Is it a candid moment shot with Ukrainian Independence fighter. Did he wake up after an all night college fraternity bender? By changing the execution of the image and the environment in which it is seen, we may experience the image in a new way unleashing our imaginations.
